Shripad Mungi is the Nastran, Patran and Fatigue Technical Support engineer and has over 8 years of experience. At MSC Software, Shripad has been supporting users of Nastran and Patran in various disciplines including Static, Dynamics, Non-linear solutions and Fatigue.
In real world, fatigue accounts for more than 60% of failure. The phenomenon has been identified almost 165 years ago; but still not fully understood. However several practices have been invented over the years to predict the fatigue life. Today it is recognized that fatigue failures can’t be avoided thoroughly, nonetheless provision can be taken at least to reduce the chances of fatigue failure.
MSC Fatigue (1990) was the first such commercial package of FE based tools. Further in 2013 NEF (Nastran Embedded Fatigue) was launched. NEF perform coupling of the stress and fatigue calculation process into single operation. One of the key feature NEF has is design optimization. It is now possible to design and optimize structures and components based on fatigue life using NEF.
