Engineers designing turbochargers face complex tradeoffs as they optimize their designs for cost, size and high transient response. One tradeoff involves sizing: a smaller diameter turbo is much better at reducing inertia, but does not generate as much pressure efficiently. Another involves efficiency versus manufacturability. The challenge is to balance these opposing design elements while delivering a wide range of speeds and flow rates, along with high efficiency across the turbocharger’s operating range.
